Anchor Balls in boating and yachting can mean two different things.
Most commonly, Anchor Balls are reference to a type of Day Shape which is a set of simple geometric shapes (ball, diamond, cylinder and cone) which must be displayed by vessels over 7m length indicating their operational status. They are the daytime equivalent to navigational lights, displayed at night time.
The ball day shape is used to indicate the vessel is at anchor and by regulation, must be a minimum 60cm diameter.

The alternative type of Anchor Ball, is one where a ball fender is attached to support a rode and anchor using an anchor ring. Using the Anchor Ball as a kind of pulley by powering towards then past the location of the anchor on the seabed, allows the anchor to be brought to the surface by the buoyancy of the ball fender, where it can then be easily hauled onto the boat.
